Terry Pratchett’s Study

Today’s topic is a little outside the usual Irreal fare; I don’t even have an appropriate tag for it. It’s about a post concerning Terry Pratchett’s study. Not his actual study but a scale model of it built by hand by a Pratchett fan for his son.

So far, that seems pretty boring but take a look at the post and the pictures in it. When I saw the first picture, I thought it was a picture of the actual study but it was really the model. The attention to detail is amazing. For example, each of the books in the bookcase have accurate replicas of the actual book covers even though most of each cover isn’t visible when it’s in the bookshelf.

Similarly, the contents of the chest are an accurate rendition of what’s actually in the chest including a manuscript containing the remaining pages of The Colour of Magic, some newspaper pages concerning Pratchett and other matters, a map, and some other items all painfully reproduced from the originals.

To me, the most amazing picture is of the final model on his son’s bookshelf. You can see how small the whole thing actually is.

You don’t have to be into model building—I’m certainly not—to appreciate this creation. In a way it reflects the master programmer’s mindset: attention to every tiny detail to make sure the whole is the best product possible.
