{"id":9206,"date":"2020-10-12T16:28:38","date_gmt":"2020-10-12T20:28:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/irreal.org\/blog\/?p=9206"},"modified":"2020-10-12T16:30:12","modified_gmt":"2020-10-12T20:30:12","slug":"useful-tools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irreal.org\/blog\/?p=9206","title":{"rendered":"Useful Tools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nikhil Marathe has an <a href=\"https:\/\/nikhilism.com\/post\/2020\/mystery-knowledge-useful-tools\/\">interesting post<\/a> on what he calls \u201cMystery Knowledge.\u201d By Mystery Knowledge he means knowledge that you aren\u2019t apt to discover on your own but that is easy to learn once it\u2019s been pointed out and, when it has been pointed out, can make a big difference in your productivity.<\/p>\n<p>Most of his post illustrates the point with some useful tools that make your day-to-day work easier. If you\u2019re an old-timey command line guy, you\u2019re reaction is probably, \u201cWell yeah. Who doesn\u2019t know about those?\u201d But a lot of younger developers work mainly with browsers and GUI\u2019s and have never come across things like the <code>file<\/code> command or <code>wireshark<\/code>. Marathe has a whole list of command line tools that can help with coding and debugging, even if you work mainly with a GUI.<\/p>\n<p>When a tool is specific to a particular OS, Marathe identifies a similar tool for the other operating systems when one is available. It doesn\u2019t matter if you work with Windows, Linux, or macOS; Marathe considers tools and techniques for all of them.<\/p>\n<p>This is a nice post with a lot of valuable information. Even if you <i>are<\/i> one of the command line folks, it\u2019s worth a read.
