My end goal, as I\u2019ve <a href=\"http:\/\/irreal.org\/blog\/?p=7899\">written<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/irreal.org\/blog\/?p=8344\">before<\/a>, is to be able to leave the house with nothing but my iPhone. That would mean using Apple Pay to buy things, a digital house key, a digital driver\u2019s license for identification and driving, and being able to unlock and start my car with my phone.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re almost there. Because of COVID-19, basically everyone but Walmart\u2014and there are <a href=\"https:\/\/appleosophy.com\/2020\/06\/23\/opinion-did-apple-plant-the-seed-for-apple-pay-acceptance-at-walmart-during-the-wwdc-keynote\/\">whispers<\/a> that even they may be ready to capitulate\u2014now accepts Apple Pay and other contactless payment methods. Apple has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/roadshow\/news\/apple-car-keyless-entry-ios-bmw\/\">announced keyless car entry in iOS 14<\/a> and BMW is expected to support the system in their 2021 BMW 5 Series of cars. And, of course, keyless house entry with the iPhone has been available for some time.<\/p>\n<p>That leaves just the digital driver\u2019s license and other ID. It\u2019s a tough nut because it depends on government action. Florida, despite a promising start, is still nowhere near agreeing on a plan and after the last bill failed, I haven\u2019t seen any other movement.<\/p>\n<p>All is not lost, though, because I have an ally. Apple also wants to get rid of the wallet and move everything onto the iPhone and has been quietly working toward that end. According to stories in <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/20\/07\/02\/apple-wants-your-iphone-to-replace-your-passport-and-drivers-license\">Apple Insider<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imore.com\/patents-point-iphone-replacing-physical-drivers-license-and-passport\">iMore<\/a>, Apple has filed a series of patents to enable the iPhone to securely carry Passports and other government IDs. Apple says that passports on your iPhone is <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/19\/09\/05\/apple-pay-vp-jennifer-bailey-keen-on-cryptocurrency-iphone-as-identification\">not too far away but won\u2019t be available in the near term<\/a>. That will be the last piece needed for going walletless and I\u2019m looking forward to it.<\/p>\n<p>Everything I\u2019ve written above applies, <i>mutatis mutandis<\/i>, to the Android and probably any other smart phone. I haven\u2019t heard anything about passports for the Android but when the government finally offers the ability, Android will certainly have their own solution to support it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I haven\u2019t written about my dream of a walletless life for a while.
