{"id":8484,"date":"2019-12-01T09:04:53","date_gmt":"2019-12-01T14:04:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/irreal.org\/blog\/?p=8484"},"modified":"2019-12-01T09:04:53","modified_gmt":"2019-12-01T14:04:53","slug":"typesetting-tables-with-booktabs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irreal.org\/blog\/?p=8484","title":{"rendered":"Typesetting Tables with Booktabs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nick Higham, whom I\u2019ve written about several times before [<a href=\"https:\/\/irreal.org\/blog\/?p=4638\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/irreal.org\/blog\/?p=4877\">2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/irreal.org\/blog\/?p=6859\">3<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/irreal.org\/blog\/?p=6861\">4<\/a>] is a mathematician at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/\">University of Manchester<\/a>. As an academic and book author he does a lot of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ma.man.ac.uk\/~higham\/papers\/bibbase.php\">publishing<\/a> and, of course, one of his go to tools is LaTeX. He cares very much about the appearance of his publications so he puts in the time to make LaTeX tweaks to get things just right.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/nhigham.com\/2019\/11\/19\/better-latex-tables-with-booktabs\/\">recent post<\/a>, he talks about the <a href=\"https:\/\/ctan.org\/pkg\/booktabs?lang=en\">Booktabs<\/a> package that he\u2019s recently started using to typeset tables. The post looks at two versions of a table from one of his books. The first uses the usual LaTeX markup and the second uses Booktabs. He says, and I agree, that the Booktabs table looks nicer and is less cluttered. In particular, the Booktabs package eschews vertical rules. That goes a long way towards making the tables look sleeker. Like Higham, I\u2019m always inclined to add vertical rules but Org-mode doesn\u2019t use them by default and I\u2019ve grown used to tables without them so their absence in the Booktabs tables doesn\u2019t bother me.
