I\u2019ve written before about not being a fan of C++. I know it\u2019s an unpopular opinion but I think it\u2019s a terrible language that removed most useful aspects of C while keeping C\u2019s problems. Partly, I suppose, that\u2019s because I\u2019m also not a big fan of Object Oriented programming in general but if I have to use it, I\u2019d much prefer to use something like Common Lisp\u2019s CLOS. C++, it seems to me, has everything backwards.<\/p>\n
All of that is a lonely position, of course, and sometimes it can seem as if I\u2019m a single lost voice shouting into the night. It turns out, though, that I\u2019m not alone. Nick Walton has a short video<\/a> in which he announces that he\u2019s moving from C++ to C in 2019. His reasons aren\u2019t particularly profound\u2014he simply doesn\u2019t like C++ and fails to see the utility of its conventions\u2014but he does mention something that is probably obvious but that I hadn\u2019t thought about: many C++ users would rather use C but feel that they must use C++ for \u201ccultural\u201d reasons. He has a clip from Mike Acton making that point.<\/p>\n There\u2019s nothing in the video that\u2019s going to change your opinion\u2014whatever it is\u2014and Walton says at the outset that that\u2019s not his intention. He\u2019s merely explaining why moving to C makes sense for him.<\/i> Likewise, I\u2019m not trying to change your mind.
