Let it generate a long, unique, random key for each site and protect those keys with a secure master password (generated by, say, <a href=\"http:\/\/world.std.com\/~reinhold\/diceware.html\">diceware<\/a>). <\/p>\n<p> Andy Moran used to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lastpass.com\/?wt.srch=1&amp;utpk=lastpass&amp;utm_source=yahoo&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_term=Lastpass&amp;utm_campaign=31447224003&amp;mcomb=vZrXYTZb%7C31447224003%7Clastpass%7Ce%7Ci8rbbhb5l0%7Cc&amp;cvosrc=ppc.yahoo-gemini.lastpass&amp;cvo_kwid=297499281006&amp;cvo_crid=31447224003&amp;Matchtype=e\">LastPass<\/a> but didn&rsquo;t like that all his data was stored on a remote sever that he didn&rsquo;t control. There are lots of password managers that don&rsquo;t have this problem\u2014I use <a href=\"https:\/\/1password.com\/\">1password<\/a> but there are plenty of others. Moran has posted about one of them, <a href=\"http:\/\/andythemoron.com\/blog\/2017-08-01\/Pass-For-Password-Management\">the Pass password manager<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.passwordstore.org\/\">Pass<\/a> is open source and tries to adhere to the Unix philosophy. Basically, every password lives in a GPG-encrypted file named for the resource it&rsquo;s protecting. The files can be manipulated with the usual Unix tools and except for being encrypted are plain text. <\/p>\n<p> Moran&rsquo;s post walks you through installing and setting the utility up. He also shows some examples of its use. If you&rsquo;re looking for a good password manager that <i>you<\/i> control and that you can sync with Git, take a look at Moran&rsquo;s post.
