{"id":10928,"date":"2022-11-05T13:43:04","date_gmt":"2022-11-05T17:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/irreal.org\/blog\/?p=10928"},"modified":"2022-11-05T13:43:04","modified_gmt":"2022-11-05T17:43:04","slug":"google-and-twitter-compared","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irreal.org\/blog\/?p=10928","title":{"rendered":"Google and Twitter Compared"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Manu Cornet worked at Google for 14 years and recently moved to Twitter (he\u2019s since been <a href=\"https:\/\/ma.nu\/blog\/bye-twitter\">caught up in the great Twitter purge<\/a>) and has an interesting <a href=\"https:\/\/ma.nu\/blog\/from-google-to-twitter\">discussion of the differences in the companies\u2019 cultures<\/a> as seen from a staff engineer\u2019s perspective.<\/p>\n<p>The differences aren\u2019t particularly profound and probably reflect Google\u2019s larger size and older age. I\u2019m not sure Cornet would agree but to me it seems as if Twitter is less bureaucratic. Again, that probably reflects smaller size and younger age.<\/p>\n<p>His discussion covers such things as outsourcing, use of open source software, remote friendliness, gender diversity, managerial technical ability, documentation, code ownership, code reviews, and a few other items.<\/p>\n<p>My career was spent mostly with comparatively smaller companies so I always find these sorts of discussion interesting: a peek into another dimension. If you\u2019re interested in different work cultures, Cornet\u2019s discussion is a worthwhile read.
